Assets Under Management (AUM)

Assets Under Management (AUM) is the total market value of assets an investor has managed by a financial institution. These financial institutions vary, but mainly fall under bank deposits, mutual funds, and brokerages.

Knowing AUM is important because it refers to how much money an investment company controls and can invest. For example, if an investor has $25,000 invested in a mutual fund managed by a venture capital firm, the fund manager can trade shares using the investor’s funds without his or her discretion.
